Description
Euphorbia obesa, commonly called the Baseball Plant, is a rare and eye-catching succulent native to South Africa. Its smooth, rounded stem resembles a green-gray ball, often marked with subtle vertical stripes or faint patterns. Over time, it can develop gentle ridges and take on reddish or purple tones under strong light. This species stores water efficiently in its thick stem, making it extremely drought-tolerant and perfect for bright, dry environments.
Unlike cacti, Euphorbia obesa contains a milky sap typical of the Euphorbia family. It rarely grows taller than 10–15 cm and remains compact, making it ideal for shelves, windowsills, or modern minimalist arrangements. In mature plants, small yellow-green flowers (cyathia) appear at the top of the stem, adding delicate beauty to its geometric form.
The plant prefers bright indirect light, infrequent watering, and a well-draining substrate. It pairs beautifully with other succulents in group displays or as a solo specimen that draws the eye with its simplicity. Easy to care for and sculptural in appearance, Euphorbia obesa is a must-have for collectors of rare and unusual succulents.
